An immigration officer was killed and another was critically hurt in a dynamite blast at Hamile.

A member of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has lost their life, and another is in serious condition after an explosion involving a motor tricycle carrying suspected dynamite in Hamile, located in the Upper West Region.

This incident took place on Tuesday, November 3, along an unauthorized path in the area, raising alarms about the transport of suspected explosive materials through illegal routes.

Sources from security in Hamile report that the explosion also resulted in the deaths of the civilians who were transporting the suspected explosives on the motor tricycle.

These civilians were reportedly being chased by security forces after they allegedly ignored a security checkpoint.

Initial reports suggest that the motor tricycle was on an unauthorized route when security personnel tried to stop it. The occupants supposedly did not follow the orders to halt, leading to a chase that ended with the explosion.

The blast affected the pursuing officers, causing the death of one Immigration officer and leaving another with serious injuries. The injured officer is reportedly in critical condition, but further information about the severity of the injuries and the hospital where the officer is being treated has not been confirmed.

Hamile, situated in the Upper West Region near Ghana’s border with Burkina Faso, is a key border community where security agencies keep watch and carry out operations to prevent unauthorized movements and other cross-border security issues.

Using unauthorized routes in border regions poses major challenges for security agencies, especially in their efforts to track the movement of people, goods, and potentially dangerous materials.
