Dr Palgrave Boakye Danquah, who speaks for Chairman Wontumi, revealed that the former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman told him about a suspected scheme involving five prisoners trying to poison him.
Dr. Palgrave made this announcement during an appearance on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Tuesday, October 27. He explained that the situation has already been reported to officials at Nsawam Prison.
According to Dr Boakye Danquah, Wontumi, who is currently serving time in prison, learned that these inmates were scheming to poison him while he was locked up.
Mr Boakye-Danquah also mentioned that authorities are currently looking into the details of this claim to figure out what’s actually going on.
“He [Wontumi] confirmed to me today when he mentioned over the weekend that there were five purported inmates who were planning to poison him and so I spoke to the Commander and he says that he has instructed for investigations to be held and has put side those inmates to different prisons and so investigations are ongoing,” he said.
Dr Boakye Danquah mentioned that Mr Wontumi was doing well and felt positive about getting his bail approved.
“Chairman Wontumi is doing fine and feeling good and is hopeful that his bail application will be approved,” he stated.
The supposed plot hasn’t been confirmed by independent sources.
He also brought up again Wontumi’s call for major reforms to Ghana’s prison system, emphasizing better treatment of prisoners, helping them change, and getting them back into the community.
Wontumi got a 20-year prison sentence after being found guilty of running mining work on his Samreboi concession without permission from the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.
While he’s fighting his conviction and sentence in the Court of Appeal, he’s asking to be let out temporarily.
