TraffiTech: Mahama calls on the police to put up warning signs where cameras are located.

President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to put up warning signs that show where speed cameras are located under the new TraffiTech-GH system.

He emphasized that drivers should be properly informed about the locations of these cameras as part of the measures that come with this new traffic enforcement technology.

“What I want to stress is that the police and those in charge of TraffiTech should install signs that indicate where the cameras are. This is essential when introducing such innovations. You need to have signposts alerting drivers that a speed camera is nearby,” he stated.

Mr. Mahama made these comments while in Antigua ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), following the launch of TraffiTech-GH by the MTTD on November 1.

This platform utilizes advanced cameras to identify traffic violations nationwide, with the first phase concentrating on speeding.

The launch has raised concerns among some drivers, who believe the government should prioritize fixing roads and enhancing related infrastructure, such as traffic lights, road markings, and signage, before enforcing traffic laws through this system. Some driver unions have even threatened to go on strike due to their concerns.

However, Mr. Mahama has insisted that the implementation of this technology should not be postponed until road conditions are ideal.

He also dismissed worries about the penalties, stating that drivers can avoid fines by adhering to the speed limits.

“If the fines are too high, then just don’t speed. There’s a simple solution to that. The maximum speed limit in town is 50km/h. No matter how good the road is, you should stick to 50km/h. If you do that, you’ll be fine and won’t have to pay anything,” he explained.
