The Tema Regional Police Command has confiscated 2,213 slabs of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp from an abandoned wooden canoe discovered on the River Volta at Tuanikopey Island.
The shipment was apprehended at approximately 12:45am on Thursday, September 17, 2026, by the Marine Police Detachment in Ada during a scheduled patrol operation.
According to law enforcement officials, the canoe’s occupants fled upon detecting the patrol unit, leaving behind the vessel and its cargo.
A thorough examination revealed 29 sacks holding the suspected controlled substances, with the slabs secured in yellow cellotape wrapping.
Authorities also recovered 14 25-litre containers, 12 of which held pre-mixed fuel, along with two Yamaha outboard motors rated at 40HP and 30HP respectively.
In an official statement issued by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs for the Tema Regional Police Command, authorities confirmed that the suspected narcotics had been transported to the Ada District Police Headquarters.
The outboard motors and pre-mixed fuel were similarly being transferred to the station as evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Law enforcement personnel are actively pursuing the identification and apprehension of those responsible for abandoning the canoe and its contents.
The Command has issued a public warning against narcotic trafficking and transportation, and has requested that anyone possessing knowledge regarding the canoe’s owners or occupants contact their local police station immediately.
