Ghana and Jamaica are preparing a broad partnership between the Tema Port and the Port of Kingston to boost trade, logistics and maritime cooperation, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced.
The planned partnership is expected to open up new opportunities for businesses in both countries, strengthen commercial ties and help create jobs through closer cooperation between the two ports.
Ablakwa shared the news after meeting Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Kamina Johnson Smith, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.
He said the Ghana-Jamaica Port Cooperation Agreement was ready, allowing the two ports to move towards closer cooperation.
“My meeting with Jamaican Foreign Minister, Her Excellency Kamina Johnson Smith, focused on our important Ghana-Jamaica Port Cooperation Agreement, which is now ready,” he said.
“The Tema Port and the Port of Kingston are expected to work together closely to increase trade, improve logistics, strengthen maritime cooperation and create jobs.”
The agreement could offer a plan for building stronger commercial ties between Ghana and Jamaica, especially through greater cooperation in maritime services and logistics.
The Tema Port is Ghana’s main seaport and a key route for the country’s international trade. The Port of Kingston is a major maritime and logistics center in the Caribbean.
Closer work between the two ports is expected to improve links between businesses in West Africa and the Caribbean. This could create opportunities for exporters, importers, shipping companies and others involved in logistics.
Stronger maritime connections with Jamaica could help Ghanaian businesses reach Caribbean markets. Jamaican businesses, in turn, could gain better commercial links with Ghana and the wider West African region.
