President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the 2027 national budget will provide an additional GH¢250 million to continue and complete the Blekusu Phase 2 coastal protection project in the Volta Region.
The money is expected to fund ongoing work to reduce coastal erosion and protect shoreline communities from further damage.
Speaking at the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival on Saturday, November 7, President Mahama said the project, which he commissioned soon after taking office, was making satisfactory progress.
“I am pleased with the progress of the work. I also want to announce that an additional 250 million Ghana cedis has been allocated in the 2027 budget to continue and complete the Blekusu Phase 2 project,” he said.
He also called on traditional leaders and residents to help protect mangroves and other coastal plants, warning that destroying them makes shorelines more exposed to erosion.
“The unchecked destruction of mangroves and coastal vegetation weakens our shoreline and leaves our coast at risk of erosion,” he cautioned.
At the festival, President Mahama also gave an update on plans for the proposed Keta Port. He announced that seven companies had been shortlisted to work with the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) on the project.
He said 47 companies had first expressed interest in becoming strategic investors in the port’s development, but due diligence narrowed the list to seven.
The shortlisted companies will move on to the next stage, which includes completing the project designs and arranging financing for construction.
President Mahama added that the port’s administration block, construction of which began under the previous administration, is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
